The secret world of fungi


Along the Rainbow Falls River walk is this trail, it's about 5 minutes walk in. What I liked about this particular spot was the gnarled tree trunks and roots. Who knows how long they've been growing there for or what stories they could tell about what they've seen over the years?


On the outside of one of these trees was some funky thing growing out of the trunk. I'm not 100% sure if it's fungi or some parasitic disease. I still have to narrow that down. I do hope it's a fungi, if we have the latter growing in our native forests then there is a danger that in the future we will have less and less of the things that make NZ special and unique.

I can imagine that earthy smell and the sound of birds along that trail.

Hello, what a beautiful trail. I am pretty sure that is a fungi, maybe a type of shelf fungi . Wishing you a great day, have a happy week ahead!

  Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. Hail

  Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
