Ocean Paua

 

Another shop on the main street of Hokitika - this shop sells products made of Paua shell and other giftware. If you haven't tried Pāua (a type of Abalone as other countries call it) then you're missing out on something good. There are number and size limit rules that people can take here to protect the marine species from going extinct, some people obey and sadly some don't. Personally I prefer them creamed on toast or in a fritter - either way they are delciious if cooked the right way.

Smoked seafood

An old photo from about 2014/2015 back when we lived in Mangawhai. Every weekend markets are held down outside the local hall where people sell their products. Most weeks there is either someone selling fresh Pahi oysters or fresh smoked fish and mussells. I wish I'd tried them but I never did as I am a huge seafood fan.

Brunch at King Wah's

Last weekend in our quest to try new places to eat at we decided to give "King Wah's Buffet Restaurant" in Paihia a go. Nice outdoor courtyard area in the shade was a blessing from the Summer heat.
 

B ordered some battered oysters which to me is almost like sacrilege as I am a huge seafood fan and to me oysters are best raw with some lemon juice drizzled on them but each to their own I guess. I ordered a shrimp cocktail with pickled seaweed and coleslaw on the side - soooo good!

An Oyster Farm in Whangaroa

This morning we drove out to Whangaroa and enjoyed another nice lunch with the other half's cousin at the Marlin Hotel. On the way out we stopped on the side of the road so I could take this photo of an oyster farm out in the harbour.

Do you like Oysters? I love them, in fact I'm a huge seafood fan I prefer them raw but the other half likes them battered and fried but to me that takes the natural ocean taste out of them.
