Te Maataapuna

While driving through the outskirts of Taupo 3 days ago I spotted this kiwiana mural on the side of the Taupo Turtle Pools building in Turangi. Just a bit of background the pools aren't for Turtles they are for toddlers, babies and little children to learn to swim but back to the mural which says "Te Maataapuna" which means "the source" and features a Tui along with a carving that looks like a Taniwha. I can't find who the artist is but I suspect it's part of the Taupo Graffiato Street Festival.

Wongi Wilson in Taupo

Another mural from Taupo this week. Painted by artist Wongi Wilson this one for Graffiato was part of the Taupo Street Art Festival in 2018. Wongi's interest in graffiti developed at a young age and for over 25 years he has watched the art form grow from virtual non-existence to a blossoming, pervasive creative influence across New Zealand.

Wongi has played a major role in transformation of graffiti art in Otautahi Christchurch and is synonymous with the rise of street art muralism in the city. From media coverage to featuring in documentaries and various publications as well as festivals, his murals have served to transform walls throughout the city and beyond.

Btw is anyone else having issues with images not showing up on Blogger? It seems one minute photos etc are here and the next they're not. Hopefully it will sort itself out.

The eyes have it

Looking back on the last year or so. April 2020 we were smack bang in the middle of lockdown here in New Zealand. B who is an essential worker was the only one working full time, myself and my 2 adult children were stuck at home unemployed and boy was it frustrating financially. Luckily I found some old dvds that were in our television cabinet so I managed to binge watch those for the 6 weeks. We are pretty fortunate and lucky here that our country is in such a good place health wise, we have our freedom as well which is pretty important if you ask me. Last week both our government and the Australia government entered into a travel bubble so people flying between the two countries could do so without having to quarantine so many people have been snapping up tickets, I wonder how long it will last?

Last week we were on holiday in Taupo, to my delight there were numerous murals around the town. This one is like the eyes are watching. Painted by Xoe Hall this one is part of the "Graffiato" Taupo Street Art Festival which is celebrated every year on Labour Weekend (last weekend of October for us).
