Earthquake prone

There are a few buildings here on the West Coast that are earthquake prone and in order to be safe, they need to have alot of strengthening done to them. This one in a main street in town from what I've heard use to be a restaurant and over the 4 years that we have lived here, it has been empty with warning signs on the front door. Last week I noticed that there were renovations being made to it, so hopefully it will be reopened eventually as another business.

Linking up with Weekend ReflectionsThe Weekend Roundup and Mosaic Monday.

I like the way NZ is so conscientious in making their buildings as earthquake safe as possible. In so many other countries you see buildings collapse with tragic results.

it will be good to see a building of character retained and used again

It’s encouraging to see new life being breathed into a long-empty, quake-prone building, hinting at both improved safety and a hopeful future for the town’s main street.

It can’t be easy or cheap to upgrade a building to prevent earthquake damage.

In our country, work is still underway to repair and strengthen earthquake damage from 10-12 years ago caused by gas extraction in the northeast of our country.

Oh, I imagine living in an earthquake zone must be stressful. In fact, I experienced minor tremors in our region many years ago and know what a frightening experience it was.

Hope the updating on the building will bring in a new business.

I slept through a small quake that shook early this morning. We've retrofitted loads of older building here, but not before the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake destroyed many-a brick building around the SF Bay Area.

When my sister was visiting us from the North Island a couple of weeks ago, we drove down to Hokitika to do some op shopping and have lunch....
