Black and White Hotel

I'm one of those people who gets a bit excited by old architecture around New Zealand. This old pub/building/hotel is located on the main street of Westport on the West Coast. Judging by the look of it I'd say it was built around the early 1920s. I'm not really sure how it got it's name, perhaps the building was originally black and white. It seems to have some bad reviews from about 5 years ago on Trip Advisor but recently there are alot of positive comments.

Rainbow connection

Back roads are the best. A few weeks ago I drove down a new road where there were a few old ramshackle buildings. This one in the middle of a field looked lonely, even with the rainbow in the sky.

So we are in lockdown until the remainder of the week except for Auckland who stays in until the 31st August, understandable really as they have the majority of the positive cases. So far I think we've gotten away rather lightly again considering the rates other countries have shown. As of today we have 107 in both Auckland and Wellington.

Old Kaeo shack

 Sometimes on my travels into different towns I see farm sheds that are falling apart or dilipated shacks. This one is along a dirt road full of pot holes, I wouldn't say there are alot of houses in this part, more like farms and dwellings people have put together to save money. I suspect the one on the left was a type of garage and the one on the right maybe a small house? Thoughts?

I'm sorry I haven't visited much this week, we were looking in car yards last week for a car I could upgrade mine too and the salesman had a head cold, so we have all been down with it. It was our first day of Winter on the 1st June - we tend to get alot of sunny days and cold nights so expect alot more skies like this over the next 3 months.

Memories of an old shack

We have all been part of a brief flu that's gone through most people I work with and my family. Nothing major - just something I think that's part of the changes in temperature during the Summer/Autumn changeover. Today the other half and I decided that we hadn't gone on a road-trip for quite some time so we ventured out to the Mahinepua Peninsula which is about 40 minutes from where we live and about 10 minutes from Matauri Bay.

There aren't many houses out there, maybe 1 that's being lived in and 3 that are closed after Summer. This little shack caught my eye though. Part of the back roof of the shed alongside the main dwelling has fallen down and the rest of it looks boarded up and unused. Maybe something dating back to before the 1950s? Not sure...but I wonder what memories it holds within, who were the people that use to enjoy this spectacular beach? hmm...

The old Petrol Station of Pongakawa

On one of our road trips not so long ago we drove past this old building on the corner of the road leading into Pongakawa a small town about 40 minutes out of Tauranga. Old buildings especially those covered in graffiti catch my attention so we stopped briefly so I could take some photos.

According to people who have lived around the area this use to be the old petrol station, not sure how old it is or when it was last used as there seems to be very little information available online about this. It's kind of a pity it hasn't been used for another purpose but then again the building doesn't look very stable anyway...
