Which way?

We visited Cape Foulwind last week after stopping in at Punakaiki and decided we would do the walk around the cliffs in the hope of seeing seals on the rocks (we did see 5 of them but my camera couldn't get close enough for a decent shot). It was a very blustery cold but sunny day so we made sure we were wrapped up warmly. This signpost was halfway up the path and I was pondering which way I would go if I could, I decided I've never been to Sydney to I'd try there. Which way would you go?

This was the view over the water and rocks we saw from near the top. Spectacular don't you think?

Little blue penguins

We were out at Punakaiki aka Pancake Rocks last week as my youngest son had never been there. These sculptures of one species of the local wildlife are little blue penguins aka Korora. Sometimes you may be able to see them swimming or wandering around the rocks.

Hello Mr Petrel

 

 

Last week one night B and I arrived home from work when I noticed this guy sitting calmly on the road. At first glance we thought he was a duck but upon closer inspection we realized he was a very large bird. We had only just had a couple of days of rain so we googled what type of bird he was and it turns out he is a juvenile Westland Petrel who normally lives out at Punakaiki which is about maybe 30 minutes away. 

We phoned the DOC emergency helpline and they advised they would send someone out the next day to pick him up. In the meantime we wrapped him in a towel, put him in a box in a quiet spot in the garage so he could rest. When he was picked up the next day the DOC officer said he had probably gotten blown away from the coastline and had stopped to have a rest.

Having a cuppa

The cafe at Punakaiki aka Pancake Rocks really is worth checking out. While my parents were visiting recently we took them here for a look around. We stopped here to get a coffee, cos you've got to have a good wakeup call in the mornings. I don't know who the lady was but she looked very restful while she was enjoying hers.

Pancake Rocks Mural

At Punakaiki aka Pancake Rocks on the outside of the Ice Cream shop is this mural showing some of the local wildlife such as the Little Blue Penguins. The artist is West Coast man Mark Haldane.
