These posters are up on the windows of the old health shop in town, they show information about the yearly Wild Foods Festival which happens in Hokitika. This is an event where businesses and people create edible goods out of insects and other stuff such as lollipops.

The NZ Army Pipe Band was in town last week conducting a music evening in the local Regent Theatre. One of the musicians popped into my work before hand, nice man, had a chat with him. Apparently they are touring the South Island right now, he was from Whanganui.

In one of the main streets in town is this colourful building, it's also where my dentist is. It was built in 1902 as a dental surgery by architect firm Gillies and Spence for Mr R. Richmond and has been used by dentists ever since.

This one of a few op shops around town - Vinnie's named after St Vincent de Paul charity shops - many of these shops are around the country in different places.

The new town library is due to open in the next couple of weeks and workmen have been fixing the footpath area opposite outside one of the local restaurants by putting in a pedestrian crossing and more carparks.

Nice to see some colour in the local gardening department of the Mitre 10 store - there seems to be lots of cyclamen around at the moment.

This week we have had 3 degree temperatures at night and Monday morning we woke up to a thin layer of ice on our cars and on the grass outside. But with days like this (above), we can't complain. But....most of this week is rain which is good for filling up my water tank.

Remember the photos I shared a couple of weeks ago of Fungi? Well this is the place we found them all at.
As we are coming into Winter, there are lots of red berries hanging off the trees but these ones are no doubt poisonous.
This track leads to Coal Creek Falls which is located in Runanga near Greymouth and the walk itself is about 30 minutes there and back to the carpark.
I think the morning we were there it was about 11 degrees celsius - so not too cold, not too hot.
All the trees and scenery reminded us of a rainforest type setting, mind you most of New Zealand looks like this anyway.
The waterfall isn't that big or high but it was worth giving this one a go as we had been meaning to do it since moving here.

I was leaving my hairdresser's last week and walking down the corridor to the street entrance when I saw one of the nearby businesses was holding a training course. There are always trade jobs available in my town because new houses are regularly being built in new subdivisions, good for young ones or those switching from one industry to another. The local chemist is to the right in this photo, where you can see the hats, they are meant to be moving to another building from what I've heard.

One night after work I stopped on one of the main streets in town to take a night shot. Not many shops except for supermarkets are open at this time of day, hence no one around. The lowest temperature we've had at night so far is 5 degrees celsius but it will get down to -2 in the next 3 months at night. Winter coughs and colds are starting to do the rounds, lucky I got my whooping cough vaccine last year as the 90 day cough is part of that strain apparently. Anyone else find since having covid your immunity is almost non existent now like us?

Bits and pieces of Autumn scenery in the Greymouth town square. Not many people around as it had just stopped raining.
This is the start of the hibernating season for me; time to crochet blankets, wearing slippers around the house, ponder starting the fire on cold days, taking vitamins to prevent getting sick and finding some good books and movies to get into.

I was filling up my car with petrol last week and further down the road I saw these 2 men working on replacing a roof on one of the nearby houses. A huge percentage of houses in my town are vintage/retro and Victorian in style. Now that we are in mid Autumn it's probably a good time to do this before Winter comes in June.

Life is starting to quiet down here with us 3/4 of the way through Autumn. The weather has been kind, so many fine warm sunny days and not a hint of cold....yet. This weekend we have plans to visit another bush walk - watch this space.

This particular no longer used coal mine has some old relics and equipment and tunnels (which are unfortunately fenced off) and the whole area is dangerous to check out up close. The walk itself takes about 25 minutes mostly uphill to a lookout at the top.
The mine was in use in the early 1900s and is apparently where the idea of a lunch break began. The miners were unhappy with having a 15 minute break and so they went on strike for 3 months in 1908 demanding the right for a half hour break instead.
The miners ending up winning and Blackball was known as a town that stuck up for New Zealand workers.
Apparently the judge had told the miners their request was unreasonable while enjoying a 90 minute lunch break for himself.
The 1908 strike was important for union history in this country and some of the leaders were later involved in starting up the Labour Party.
The mine operated until 1964 but today it is a preserved site that still has a large chimney, fan houses and equipment scattered around like old wheels.
And this is the view from the top over the nearby Blackball township which is about 20 minutes out of Greymouth.

Last weekend we drove out to Cobden (a suburb nearby) as I had heard that one of the window companies there were selling second hand windows. We are in the process of renovating the laundry to be the new bathroom. Currently our bathroom is located in a strange box like area which is very small so we have moved the laundry out the garage and the bathroom will move to where the laundry was.
We ended up buying 2 windows at a very cheap price. The one on the left is going to be the main bathroom window and the one on the right will be the toilet window, both chosen because with the type of glass, you can't see in or out for privacy. The toilet window will be high up.
Today is ANZAC Day (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) and remembered every year for those who have fought in every war but specifically to remember the anniversary of the 1915 Gallipoli landing during WW1. I have relatives and ancestors who have fought in both WW1 and WW2 that we remember and most towns have dawn services and parades. I'm down with a minor head cold this weekend so I won't be going anywhere.
