Arahura

 

This week's mural is another one from the Hokitika pathway. Named "Arahura" a Maori te reo word meaning "pathway to dawn" by Andrew Dempster and here is some information I found about him:

Andrew's life is immersed in art, from a love of art school, attending art school and teaching art at secondary school. He enjoys seeing young peoples creativity unfold and grow while also unleashing his own artistic talents in fresh works.

Out my window

 

This is another piece of street art that I saw on the Hokitika Beach pathway a couple of weeks ago. Named "Out my window" and the artist is Sheryl Brooker.

Waves

There is a fence along the side of a house in Hokitika that has been painted with waves and a Maori waka (canoe), it brightens up the property. The artist is Mark Haldane aka RAJA, a local Greymouth artist.

SPCA Mural

We spotted this mural on the side of the SPCA (Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) and loved it. It shows a shadow version of dogs, cats, birds and rodents playing on and under a tree. We can't wait to get our own rescue dog and another cat.

Hi Possum!

I saw this wee mural on the wall outside a shop in Hokitika 2 weeks ago. The artist is Clare Reilly from Christchurch and she has been painting/exhibiting her artwork for over 3 decades. Possums, as cute as they are, are pests here. They eat our native flora and take away food sources from our native birds and creatures.

They were introduced from Australia in in 1837 because of their fur and there are many shops throughout the country which sell products made from it. Although a bit expensive the clothing is extremely popular with tourists. Some people have Possums as pets, in fact I remember one of my cousins had one many years ago.
